Firas Maksad speaks with Al-Jazeera English about the Iran-backed Houthi militias' attack on Riyadh
Iran has been using Yemen’s Houthi militias to gain leverage over Saudi Arabia. For Riyadh, fighting a well-trained and well-armed Iranian proxy force on its southern border is a “war of necessity.” In the wake of US Ambassador Nikki Haley’s presentation to the United Nations, there should be little doubt that Iran is supplying advanced weaponry components to the Houthis. Resolving the Yemen conflict requires de-escalation. The Houthis’ ballistic missile attack on the Saudi capital achieves the opposite; it is an escalatory move representative of a situation where Saudi Arabia increasingly finds itself playing defense to Iran’s offense.
